What are workouts?

Most commonly used by "open gym" style facilities like CrossFit, this feature allows you to write out workout plans that become accessible to your customers via their Momence mobile app, and can also be seen on digital "whiteboards", using display screens within your studio.

Digital white boards (which can be any color) display on screens in your gym at times of your choosing, for customers to walk in and immediately know what the workout of the day is.

Once you've activated the Workouts App within your Admin dashboard, your customers in the mobile app will see a "Workouts" tab where the workout of the day appears on the day its scheduled. During setup, you'll also see an option to allow your customers to score their workout results.

Here's a quick preview of what the customer experience is with scoring on the app.

Once you've activated this app within your Admin dashboard, your customers in the mobile app see a "Workouts" tab where the workout of the day appears.

In addition, when you are setting up a workout for your customers, you'll see an option to allow your customers to score their workout results.

Where will it show in my dashboard?

After you activate Workouts from the App store, it will display right under Appointments. Workouts will show three sub-sections: Programming, Workout List (templates), and Tracks.

How does scheduling work?

After you activate Workouts from the App store, it will display right under Appointments. Workouts will show two sub-sections: Workout List (Templates) and Programming (Scheduling of those templates). After creating a template from Workout List, you can schedule one using Programming.

When creating a template, you'll see options name the workout type, describe it, and add components -- the actual things the customer will need to do in the workout. Components have assignable measurement types to fit the most common workouts, like Time, Reps, or "None" if neither applies.

Examples could be:

Run 5k - (you'd select None for this, and the customer would only see "Run 5k")

Plank - 2 minutes

Deadlift 50kg - 10 reps

To create a new workout template, click Workout List > New Workout

To schedule a workout > click Programming > then hover over the day you'd like it to become available to customers.

Choose from your available templates or create a new workout from scratch

Customers will now be able to see this Workout on the day you scheduled it. It won't become visible until that day. And, if you're using Tracks, which only show workouts to certain customers (via tags), this workout will only show to those customers.

How do I control which customers see a workout?

With Tracks. Tracks use Tags to restrict visibility of the workout.

Ie. if you have a membership that's tagged, then everyone on that membership has that tag. To show this workout to just customers on that membership, click New Track, and add that tag to this track.

You can call this track whatever you want, and select whichever tag(s) should see the workout.

Remember to check that your tags are applied correctly to memberships or which ever customer list you have tagged.

Can customers score how they did?

You can allow the customer to score each component of their workout, and specifically guide them on how to. After they score their workout, you'll be able to see the customer’s scores from the workout detail.

You can choose from the following options your customers will see:

  • none

  • weightlifting (weight [lbs/kgs] + number of reps)

  • distance [m, km, mi, feet],

  • AMRAP, which stands for "as many reps (or rounds) as possible," this option will include # of reps, and a field for time allotted.

How do I set up scoring?

Each component of a Workout has a Scoring section. Click its dropdown to for options.

Next, click Actions > Edit

Next, click a pencil icon next to the component you'd like to add Scoring for.

Lastly, click the Scoring dropdown and start adding criteria.

You can add multiple scoring options if its warranted. Here's another Workout Component that has more than one.

This workout component tells the customer to do 20 pull ups and time themselves. For the Primary Scoring we've chosen Time. For Unit we've chosen minutes. For secondary we've added an option to report as many reps as possible (AMRAP). In the description we've added some short instructions so that customers know what to expect before starting the workout.

What's the customer experience in the mobile app?

Here's a short video of what customers will see in their mobile app, when opening a workout of the day.

Schedule Recurring Workouts

Do you schedule the same workout for certain days of the week and repeat that schedule for blocks of time? This has never been easier, using the new schedule recurring function. Now, anytime you are scheduling a workout, you can toggle on schedule recurring and you will have the option to choose the number of days between each workout (ie 7 days if it happens every Friday) and then select the number of workouts you’d like to have repeat, or choose a specific date for the recurring schedule to end.

To schedule a recurring workout, navigate to Workouts > Programming > Schedule workout > toggle on ‘schedule recurring.’

Copy Blocks of Workouts

Another new feature to make scheduling workouts a breeze for you and your team is the new Copy workouts function. This option allows you to copy all workout programming from a particular date range over to a new set of dates. Copying workouts can be incredibly useful if you tend to work in blocks to support your clients in seeing growth in particular exercises over time. For example, maybe you have a certain workout routine per quarter, where the the workout components are the same for each day of the week for three months at a time. Each quarter is different, however, you cycle back to the original routine after a year. With the ability to copy workouts, you will not have to reschedule each day of the week again when the year starts over, you can simply copy the entire workout schedule from January 1st - March 31st of 2024 to January 1st - March 31st of 2025.

You can find the Copy workouts option under Workouts > Programming > click the three dots at the top right > Copy workouts.

Customers Can Track Progress in the Momence App

You have been able to see and track your client’s progress over time within Workouts from your host dashboard, however, this is now available for your customers to see within their Momence app! Seeing their scores and a visual of how much stronger they are getting over time is an exciting way to keep your customers engaged and motivated to keep coming back. Make sure to instruct your customers to keep track of their progress through the Momence app under the Workouts tab, and now they can see their progress for any workout component under Workouts > My records.

How do I associate a workout with a class?

Momence allows you to associate a workout template with a class template (or more than one).

If you've scheduled both classes and workouts from these templates, and they happen to fall on the same day, then customers that have registered for any of these classes will have access to the workout -- as long as the class falls on the same day that one of these workouts is scheduled.

This linking of workout templates with class templates is done from:

Workouts > Workout List > edit a specific workout template, scroll past Components and click Class Templates > choose which class templates to associate > Save.

In Workouts, can customers score how they did?

You can allow the customer to score each component of their workout, and specifically guide them on how to.

Whats the max number of customers displayed on a Leaderboard?

Five.

With Workouts, a Whiteboard's Leaderboard will grow as submissions are received until it hits 5 leaders for each category. Afterward, it will update itself based on new submissions.

Does it need to be refreshed?

No, it refreshes automatically as soon as scores are submitted from customers through the mobile app.

Workouts: How to customize your Whiteboard's background color

Whiteboards display the Workout of the Day or a Lesson Plan, or something akin that needs to be put up on a TV screen.

You can now change the background color of your whiteboard by navigating to the Whiteboard in question and clicking Edit Whiteboard.

Near the bottom, click Background color.

Find your color choice and save.

You can preview the full whiteboard via this button.

Note that if a workout isn't scheduled for today, you won't see anything listed here. You can always temporarily change an upcoming workout's date to today to view it here.

Workouts: How to enable Leaderboards on Whiteboards

Leaderboards rank your customers based on how they performed in todays workout and can help motivate your customers to outdo their piers.

To enable this, edit the whiteboard in question

Enable this toggle > Save at the bottom.

Now, on the days you have scheduled workouts, customers will be able to log their performance and then see their numbers immediately put up on the screen.

Below, on the mobile app, Kim has just completed her workout and has put up some pretty impressive numbers.

She can now look up at the Whiteboard to see that she's currently sitting in first place in both categories.

Workouts can now be scheduled as recurring

To get started, click Workouts > Programming > Schedule Workout

Select the workout, its track, the start date and toggle on 'Schedule Recurring'.

Then choose:

  • how many days between each workout,

  • when to end the series (how many to schedule or on a specific date)

Preview the workout at the bottom of the pop up before clicking Schedule.

You'll now see the workouts listed on your Workout Schedule.

Customers will be able to view your workouts from their mobile app on the day they're scheduled.

Whiteboards: automatically display your scheduled Workouts for customers to follow along with

Our Workouts feature now has a new addition: Whiteboards. Whiteboards allow you to have your scheduled workouts automatically displayed on large screens on the days they're scheduled for.

For example if you've scheduled a workout for August 14th, and created a Whiteboard that displays it, the morning of August 14th will auto-display your workout in the dark mode format you see on the right.

So, the night before the scheduled workout, there's no longer a need to physically write out the workouts on a physical whiteboard. To learn more about how Workouts work, see our Workouts FAQ's page.

You can even create multiple Whiteboards that cater to specific workout Tracks. If you've already created your workouts, and scheduled them, all thats left to do is create a white board to display these workouts to your customers.

Create your Whiteboard

Click Workouts > Whiteboards > New Whiteboard

Choose what to name it > (you can have multiple whiteboards) > then choose whether this whiteboard displays only certain workout tracks. (Note that if you leave this blank, the whiteboard will just display whichever workout is scheduled for today, regardless of which track its associated with).

Workouts are made of components and sometimes also have descriptions, so if you'd also like these items displayed on the Whiteboard, toggle those settings on.

Remember that you don't have to include all the details of these on the Whiteboard, as your customers will have access to the full workouts descriptions and components on their phone's mobile app.

Set up your display

Connect a device to a monitor to display your whiteboard to your customers.

Login to Momence on this device, click Workouts > Whiteboards > select the white board and click its link to leave this screen on the Whiteboard page. Now, anytime a workout fits with this whiteboard's track settings, it will display here on the day its scheduled.

What does a Whiteboard display when there's no workout scheduled?

It will show the time of day, the name of the track (if it has one selected), and a notice that there isn't a workout currently under way.

Where can I activate Workouts?

In the left hand nav, click Apps and Integrations > App Store.
